3. Every decision reveals what we value—especially when doing the right thing carries a cost.
In Kural 983, Thiruvalluvar identifies five pillars of moral excellence. We can turn them into five questions for everyday decisions:
அன்புநாண் ஒப்புரவு கண்ணோட்டம் வாய்மையொடு
ஐந்துசால்பு ஊன்றிய தூண். # 983

அன்பு — Love
Am I acting with sincere care for others?
நாண் — Moral conscience
Is this an action I can stand behind with a clear conscience?
ஒப்புரவு — Social responsibility
Have I considered the needs of the community?
கண்ணோட்டம் — Considerate compassion
Am I treating the people affected with humanity and sensitivity?
வாய்மை — Truthfulness
Are my words honest, responsible and free from harmful deception?
Related verses deepen this discipline: examine your intentions, restrain envy and anger, and refuse gains secured by harming others.
Our values become visible in the choices we make—and the gains we are willing to refuse.
