Personal Mission Statement:
I live to love, practise virtue, contribute to others’ well-being, and earn respect through worthy conduct.
What Makes Life Worth Living?
- Kural 231 — Give and earn honor through worthy living
Giving and living honorably are presented as life’s worthy gain. Here, honor means respect deserved through conduct, rather than publicity or popularity.
- Kural 31 — Make virtue your highest pursuit
Valluvar asks what greater advancement life can have than virtue. How we live gives value to what we achieve.
- Kural 80 — Give life substance through love
Love gives meaningful life its substance. The striking bodily image emphasizes the ethical importance of caring relationships.
- Kural 214 — Participate in the well-being of others
Valluvar associates truly living with understanding and practising shared responsibility. Our lives acquire meaning through participation in the lives of others.
- Kural 39 — Seek happiness through virtue
The happiness praised here comes through virtue. The means through which we pursue happiness matter.
- Kural 322 — Sustain life through sharing
Sharing nourishment and protecting living beings receive foremost ethical esteem. Purpose takes concrete form in helping life flourish.
- Kural 981 — Make goodness a responsibility
For someone committed to moral excellence, good qualities and deeds become duties—a continuing commitment expressed through action.
Taken together, a contemporary personal mission could be:
“I live to love, practise virtue, contribute to others’ well-being, and earn respect through worthy conduct.”
This is a synthesis of these verses, not a direct quotation.
