Aram begins with mind, a condition of the mind where all negative tendencies like envy, desire, anger, and harshness are absent. This leads to mind’s integrity, virtuous living and social harmony.
A mind with integrity maintains steadfastness to truth, ethical principles, and fairness, even under pressure or temptation. This requires integrating mind and heart means achieving identity integration.
Practical aspects:
- Acting honestly even when no one is watching
- Holding consistent moral values despite external influences
- Being accountable and truthful in thoughts and actions
- Cultivating self-awareness to identify and eliminate biases or unethical tendencies
A guiding principle or value (illaram – thuravaram)
A guarding spirit of the society or the nation (Kural #546)

Aram is simple, mindful decisions that preserve harmony within oneself, in society, and in all forms of life in the natural world. To live in aram is to live in balance — morally, socially, and ecologically.
Aram: அறம்: refers to those activities that are essential for being human in the realm of nature. Aram is distinct from both virtue and dharma.
Aravor or Anthanar, are those who show compassion toward all living beings. Kural #30

Aravor are those who practice Aram – they are righteous people devoted to moral and spiritual living.
